A stonecutter was hired to mark the entrance of a temple. The priests wanted symbols — six glyphs in a ring around the door, old language, meant to warn and welcome at the same time.
The stonecutter studied the doorway. The stone was hard and old. Carving into it would take weeks. So she mixed a pigment — copper oxide and egg, the color of winter sky — and painted the glyphs directly onto the surface.
They looked beautiful. For three days.
On the fourth day, the temple's procession walked through the doorway, and their robes brushed the painted symbols. The glyphs smeared. Not gone, but wrong — half a warning, half a welcome, the meaning somewhere in between.
The stonecutter repainted. This time she applied a sealant first, a lacquer that would harden over the pigment and protect it from contact. The glyphs gleamed under their glass shell, brighter than before.
For six days, they held.
On the seventh, rain pooled in the lintel above the door. Water crept beneath the lacquer's edge, found the gap between sealant and stone, and lifted the painted glyphs away from the surface in long curling strips. The lacquer had protected the paint from the procession. It had also sealed out the stone's porosity — the tiny channels through which moisture escapes. With nowhere to go, the water pushed from behind what the sealant held from the front.
The stonecutter tried a third approach: she etched shallow grooves into the stone's surface, then filled the grooves with pigment, then sealed the grooves individually. A hybrid. The depth of carving without the weeks of labor.
This held for a month. Then the frost came, and the shallow grooves — too thin to flex, too rigid to breathe — cracked along their length. The symbols split down the middle. Each half still legible. The whole, lost.
The temple's architect had been watching from across the square for all of this.
"The problem," she said, walking over, "is that your marks don't belong to the wall."
"They're on the wall."
"On it. Not of it. Paint sits on top. Sealant sits on top of paint. Grooves are wounds with paint inside. The wall treats all of them as foreign material. It will always push them out — with robes, with water, with frost. Whatever tool the season offers."
"You want me to carve the glyphs. Full depth, full weeks."
"I want you to make the glyphs out of stone."
She meant: carve relief blocks separately — the same stone as the wall, the same mineral, the same grain — and set them into the wall at the positions where glyphs should stand. Not on the surface. Not in shallow cuts. Built into the structure at the depth where the wall's own weight holds them.
The stonecutter carved six blocks. Each one a glyph. Each one the same stone as the wall around it.
She set them into the wall where the painted glyphs had been. They sat flush. They breathed with the stone. When the procession's robes brushed them, there was nothing to smear. When rain pooled, there was nothing to lift. When frost came, the glyph blocks expanded and contracted at the same rate as the wall they were part of.
The glyphs didn't need protection. They were the wall.
The three painted versions had each failed differently. The stonecutter had learned three things about what didn't work — robes smear paint, sealant traps moisture, shallow grooves crack in frost. Useful knowledge. But none of it pointed toward the answer, because the answer wasn't a better version of paint. It was a different relationship between the mark and the surface.
The architect saw it because she thought about walls. The stonecutter missed it because she thought about marks.
